WEARSIDE LEAGUE by MALCOLM PRATT

AFTER  suffering  only their second defeat of the season in the  previous  game, Wearside  League  leaders  Easington  Colliery  bounced  back  to  form  against Annfield Plain last night.

Former  Durham  City  player  Simon Todd, signed from Seaham Red  Star,  made  a dream  debut  giving the Colliers a third-minute lead. His long-range shot  flew into the net, giving Plain goalkeeper Stephen Kennedy no chance.

The  visitors  quickly levelled as Dominic Elliott finished off a  nicely-worked move  but  two goals in a minute early in the second period had  Easington  back in the ascendancy.

James  Donnelly  cut in from the right and fired into the top corner of the  net before  Dale  Crawford  made  it 3-1 with a fierce drive from the  edge  of  the penalty area.

Easington  remain  nine  points in front of New Marske who came from  behind  to win 3-1 at Silksworth.

James  Gillespie finished off a good move down the left, slotting the ball  home at the far post after just a couple of minutes.

The  Wearsiders  though  were  then undone when they failed to  defend  two  set pieces.  Shaun  Howes  equalised following a corner and  Michael  Mackin  struck from a free kick.

Midway  through  the  second period, Shaun Mackin beat goalkeeper  John  McClean and  although  they pressed in the later stages, the Wearsiders rarely  troubled Seasiders' keeper Justin Hutchinson.

Ryhope CW stay third despite conceding two points to visitors Redcar Athletic.

Sam  Young  headed  in  a corner after only three minutes  but  by  the  seventh minute John Butler had equalised for Ryhope.

Houghton  Town  gained a welcome victory when they defeated Kirkbymoorside  with a 13th-minute goal from Chris Curtis which was worthy of winning any game.

Curtis  was  well outside the penalty area when he struck a superb volley  which rocketed  into  the  top  corner of the net giving  goalkeeper  Aaron  Rivis  no chance.

Both  teams  produced an excellent game of attacking football and despite  going down  to 10 men on 70 minutes with the dismissal of Rob McDermott, the  visitors had Houghton penned back into their own half but failed to equalise.

Boldon  CA  celebrated the switching on of their new floodlights when they  went nap against Coxhoe Athletic.

Kris  Robertson  bagged  a brace of goals with Michael Meek,  James  Hudson  and Shaun Reay (pen) completing a comprehensive 5-0 victory.

Alan  Blair, Laurie Black and Dean Rogers (2), swept Windscale to a 4-1  success at Willington whose only reply came from debutant John Roberts.

Cleator   Moor  Celtic  played  only  their  third  game  this  year  and  edged Hartlepool  2-1  with  goals  from Robbie Fowler and Craig  Padley.  Shaun  Ross replied for Pools.

EASINGTON Colliery were on the receiving end of the shock result of the season
on Saturday when Willington won at Hall Lane.

Andy Colledge's side went into the game having lost just once in 21 games and
boasting by far the best goals difference.

They were firm favourites to take another step towards promotion but were
rocked on 33 minutes when Jason White beat the offside trap and slotted the
ball wide of goalkeeper Nicky Lawson.

Willington went two up after an hour. The ball stuck on the difficult surface
and when Easington's defenders failed to clear, Danny Lee pounced.

Just before the end the Colliers almost reduced the deficit as an effort
rebounded from the underside of the crossbar but Willington keeper Andrew
Stocks was quick to react.

Easington still command a nine-points lead but New Marske, whose fixture was
one of five to be postponed, now have two games in hand.

Prudhoe Town prop up the table after losing to Darlington RA despite scoring
first with a good effort from Andy Hoban.

Michael Richardson restored parity on the hour and six minutes from time, Nick
Petch beat goalkeeper Ross Thomas in a goalmouth scramble.

David Turner fired Annfield Plain into a halftime lead at home to Coxhoe
Athletic and Paul Henderson doubled the advantage with 10 minutes remaining.

At this stage, the Plain were coasting to victory but when Shaun Laverick
reduced the deficit on 87 minutes an exciting finale ensued. Coxhoe though
failed to claim an equaliser.

Alan Blair gave Windscale the lead after just 15 seconds at Kirkbymoorside for
whom goalkeeper Adam Maxon saved a Dean Rogers penalty before Ryan Cooper,
Johnny Brown and Uyi Ehima earned the points for the Yorkshiremen.

Ryhope CW, who are third top, had their fixture with Boldon CA called off and
the games between Silksworth and Cleator Moor Celtic, Houghton Town at Stockton
Town, Jarrow versus Ashbrooke Belford House and Wolviston against New Marske
also fell victim to waterlogged pitches.

EASINGTON  Colliery still command a healthy lead at the top of the table but  it was  reduced  to nine points when New Marske managed to stage one of only  three games on Saturday.

The  Seasiders suffered a setback as Annfield Plain's Colin Snailham converted a penalty  but  a  minute  before  the interval New Marske  were  also  awarded  a spot-kick which Ricky Phillips fired past goalkeeper Stephen Kennedy.

It  remained  nip  and  tuck  until the home side  put  the  game  beyond  their opponents, scoring three times in eight minutes late in the game.

Daniel  Jones was on target before Phillips completed his hat-trick to help  New Marske into second place with a game in hand on Easington.

At  the  other end of the table Coxhoe Athletic  are second bottom  following  a three-goals defeat at home to Redcar Athletic.

Billy  Millington  bagged  a brace of goals in the first half and  although  the second  period  was  more evenly contested, James Kesterton made it  three  just before the end.

Jarrow  twice  came from behind to claim a point at Hartlepool.  Daniel  Corbett was  a  10th-minute  marksman  and before the break Dean Patton  rifled  in  the equaliser from the edge of the penalty area.

Within  three  minutes  of  resuming  Pools were again  in  front  through  Carl McDermott  and  there were only three minutes left on the clock as Paul  Turrell delivered  a  clinical  finish from 20 yards which gave home  goalkeeper  Philip Wilson no chance.

Four  league  fixtures  were called off as were the Sunderland  Shipowners'  Cup Semi-Finals  between  Easington  and Cleator Moor Celtic and  Ryhope  CW  versus Kirkbymoorside.

THE  games involving the leading trio were postponed but Ashbrooke Belford House failed to take advantage and close in on their rivals.

Victory  would have lifted them into third place but despite scoring first, they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Annfield Plain.

Mark   Green  raised  the  expectations  of  Tommy  Dobbing's  team  before  the introduction of Stephen Kirkbride early in the second period proved decisive.

It was Kirkbride who fired Annfield Plain back into the game and 20 minutes from time he was left with a simple tap-in for what proved to be the winning goal.

Ashbrooke  have  slipped  back to fifth and Windscale are now  fourth  following their thrilling five-goals contest with Willington.

The  Cumbrians  made  a dream start, scoring twice in the  opening  20  minutes. Player  manager Matthew Henney headed in at the near post on five minutes before Dean  Rogers  was  left with a simple chance following excellent  work  by  Alan Blair.

It looked all over for Willington as Andrew Hurley produced a tremendous 30-yard drive which swerved away from goalkeeper Chris Sawyer on its way into the net.

With 20 minutes remaining, however, Daniel Lee threw the visitors a lifeline and when  Michael Weston beat the offside trap after 75 minutes, the result was  all to play for.

Windscale  held  on for a 3-2 victory and are fourth - their highest  rating  so far.

Boldon CA have struggled near the bottom of the table for most of the season but they  marginally improved their position with a six-goals blast at Cleator  Moor Celtic.

There  was  no hint of the goals avalanche which was to follow when  both  sides managed just one apiece in the opening period.

Michael Dickinson struck for Celtic with Chris Robertson on target for the South Tynesiders who went on to dominate the second half.

Further  goals flowed from Shaun Reay (2), Michael Meek (2) and Shaun Heals with Barry Irvine claiming a second consolation for the hosts.

Coxhoe  Athletic slipped to second from bottom after losing by the only goal  to Darlington Cleveland Bridge.

The  outcome  of a poor game was decided in the 38th minute when  Dan  McLachlan fired home at the far post past Coxhoe goalkeeper Tom Orton.

Jarrow  grabbed a stoppage-time equaliser at Kirkbymoorside where Liam Clark had given them a ninth-minute lead, as his low shot found the net from the inside of the post.

Soon  afterwards  Peter Kane's penalty was saved by home goalkeeper Adam  Magsen and just before the interval, Rob McDermott levelled.

Sarjo  Cham gave the Yorkshiremen the lead for the first time midway during  the second  half  and it was not until the 91st minute that Peter Kirkham  earned  a point for the visitors.

Hartlepool's  game with Prudhoe Town was abandoned after just two minutes. Pools Philip  Ross broke the same leg he fractured two years ago and after being taken to  hospital  by ambulance, players from both teams decided they didn't want  to continue. Their wish was upheld by the referee.

EASINGTON Colliery and Ryhope CW were both on the receiving end of shock results in last night's Wearside League programme.

The Colliers went into their home fixture with Wolviston firm favourites but were rocked as the visitors enjoyed a 3-0 romp.

Ryan Hebb produced a good finish from the edge of the penalty area on 16 minutes and 12 minutes from time, Kallum Hannah doubled the visitors' lead.

In the last minute the Colliers threw everyone forward for a corner, including goalkeeper Niki Lawson and when the ball was cleared, David Aninakwah completed a comprehensive victory for Wolviston.

It was Easington's first reverse in 21 games but they still have a 10-points lead over Ryhope CW who were also surprisingly defeated, by Hartlepool.

The only goal came after 35 minutes when 16-year old Craig Hutchinson scored for the first time since joining Pools.

Silksworth also went down by the only goal to Stockton, whose scorer was David Johnson, and there was another defeat for Houghton Town who crashed 4-1 to Jarrow.

Peter Kane (2), Liam Clarke and Chris Coombes had the visitors four goals up until the 85th minute when Micky Curtis scored the goal of the game with a tremendous individual effort.

Prudhoe Town celebrated winning for only the second time in 24 games. Just before the end of their home fixture with Cleator Moor Celtic, Michael Pooley drove past Craig Devine.

Annfield Plain defeated Willington thanks to Colin Snailham (pen) and Jonathan Kemp. Mitchell Sowerby had levelled from the spot.

WEARSIDE LEAGUE By MALCOLM PRATT

SILKSWORTH moved out of the bottom three with victory over out-of-form Houghton Town at Leyburn Grove on Saturday.

Richard Maughan and Jonathan Fox had Steven Smith's side two goals up by half-time and it was just about all over for Houghton when James Gillespie made it three after an hour.

Houghton, who have played more games than any other side, have slipped to sixth from the basement and conceded 77 goals from 25 matches.

Bottom-of-the-table Prudhoe Town have leaked the most goals and the five which Ryhope CW racked up took their unenviable total to 88.

The Wearsiders, now second top, went ahead through Martin Metcalfe but suffered a blow a minute before the interval with the dismissal of captain Phil Hall.

The numerical disadvantage, however, didn't pose a problem and in the second period they went nap with a superb hat-trick by substitute John Butler and one goal from David Newby.

Boldon CA are just above Prudhoe Town after losing to Stockton Town whose marksmen were Joe Hinchley and Matthew Richardson.

There's no stopping Easington Colliery at the other end of the table and they enjoy a 10-points lead over Ryhope CW with the sides having played the same number of games.

The Colliers made it 17 wins and three draws in 20 games when they defeated fourth-top Ashbrooke Belford House with a brace of goals by Barry Turton and one from Dale Crawford after Alan Young had fired Ashbrooke ahead.

Shaun Ross scored both Hartlepool goals in the win over Willington while Shaun Gregory's first-half header proved sufficient for Wolviston at Kirkbymoorside.

James Kesterton and Daniel Drazdauskas were Redcar Athletic's matchwinners over Annfield Plain whose only reply came from Colin Snailham.

The goals flowed at Darlington Cleveland Bridge but they were all scored by Windscale who are up to fifth. Dean Rogers rifled a hat-trick with Graeme Goulding also finding the net.

New Marske, in third position, just two points behind Ryhope CW with a game in hand, maintained their challenge for a league and cup double with victory at Coxhoe Athletic.

Shaun Mackin and Daniel Jones netted with Philip Bulmer replying for Coxhoe. Victory earned the Seasiders their place in the Third Round of the League Cup. Jarrow's tie at Cleator Moor Celtic was postponed because of a water-logged pitch.

EASINGTON Colliery stretched their lead at the top of the Wearside League to
nine points but their game with Jarrow was marred with only four minutes
remaining.

Jarrow's Lee Smith had only been on the field 10 minutes when he suffered a
suspected broken leg and was taken by ambulance to hospital.

There was a 20-minute delay before the Colliers emerged 1-0 winners thanks to
Adam McGuinness's fierce shot after only eight minutes.

Houghton Town played 88 minutes with 10 men and almost the entire second half
with just nine. It wasn't surprising therefore, that they crashed to a 5-0
defeat against Hartlepool at Leyburn Grove.

Mark Catchside was red-carded after two minutes following an off-the-ball
incident and two minutes later Shaun Ross converted a penalty.

Further goals followed from Ian Purvis, Steve Chapman and Ross to leave Houghton
with a mountain to climb at the halfway stage.

They made three substitutions during the interval and early in the second
period, Brad Freeman was injured and took no further part in the game.

Despite being two men short, Houghton did not concede a fifth goal until just
before the end when Chapman struck for a second time.

Silksworth were the latest side to feel Kirkbymoorside's scoring prowess. The
Yorkshiremen put 10 goals past Prudhoe Town at the weekend and scored three on
their visit to Wearside.

Tom Ellis steered the ball wide of goalkeeper Anthony Mustard after 15 minutes
before two goals in the five minutes immediately before the interval ended
Silksworth's hopes.

Rob McDermott latched onto a long ball over the defence and gave Mustard no
chance and Martin Cooper hit a tremendous 25-yard shot which crashed into the
net.

Ryhope CW progressed in the Wearside League Cup following a five-goals thriller
with Annfield Plain.

Dean Lee fired the visitors in front and on the stroke of half time Clayton
Davis levelled.

Early in the second period Martin Metcalfe pounced on a defensive blunder to
give Ryhope the lead only for Stephen Kirkbride to restore parity on 70 minutes.

With time running out, Metcalfe hit the winner from inside the six-yard box.

Willington are the most improved side this season and they went through against
Redcar Athletic who have now lost their last four games.

Mikey Weston and Jason White were the scorers in a 2-0 win at Hall Lane.

With  only  three  minutes remaining, New Marske were awarded  a  penalty  which Michael  Mackin  fired past Nicky Lawson, who again impressed making his  second appearance.

The  scene  was  set for a frenetic finale. The hosts pressed searching  for  an equaliser  but  the  Colliers'  defenders stood firm and played a  big  part  in their side's crucial victory.

Ryhope  CW,  whose  fixture was one of five to be postponed, stay third  just  a point  adrift of New Marske while Ashbrooke Belford House regained winning  form at Hartlepool.

Immediately  on  resuming,  Michael Charlton doubled the  Wearsiders'  lead  but despite  playing  with  just 10 men, Pools performed better  during  the  second period.

Carl  Anderson  volleyed  home a Johnny Bolton free kick and the hosts  had  the chance to equalise 12 minutes from the end.

They  were  awarded  a penalty and goalkeeper Brett Wilson turned  Shaun  Ross's kick  onto  the  post. The ball rebounded and Wilson made a fantastic  stop  and then somehow got his legs to the ball as Ross followed up a second time.

Two  minutes  later, the pressure on Belford House was relieved as Peter  Benson broke  clear  of the home defence and chipped the goalkeeper. A minute from  the end Ashbrooke's Michael Melmore was dismissed.

Because  of  work  commitments,  several Houghton Town players  were  unable  to travel and it wasn't surprising that Windscale emerged 4-2 winners.

Alan  Blair,  with  a  brace, Dean Rogers and Laurie Black had  them  firmly  in command  by  the 26th minute but Houghton produced a better performance  in  the second period.

Mark  Catchside  reduced the four-goals deficit two minutes after the break  and then  converted  a  72nd-minute penalty. Houghton dominated for 10  minutes  but Windscale soaked up the pressure and in the end were comfortable winners.

RYHOPE  CW missed the opportunity to go second in the Wearside League when  they
went down by the only goal to Jarrow.

A  hard-fought  game was decided on the hour when Paul Turrell  beat  goalkeeper
Neil Atkinson from inside the penalty area.

Ryhope  pressed  for an equaliser in the later stages but failed to find  a  way
through Jarrow's defence which was considerably tighter than at the weekend when
they conceded four goals.

Ryhope  remain third, a point behind New Marske whose fixture at Silksworth  was
postponed.

Easington  Colliery stretched their lead at the top of the table to three points
with victory over Redcar Athletic.

Andy Porritt gave the Teessiders the lead on 38 minutes with a tremendous finish
from  outside the penalty area but the Colliers turned the tables, scoring twice
in four minutes just before the interval.

Dale  Crawford blasted a shot into the top corner of the net but the goal of the
match was Chris Tarn's magnificent strike which screamed into the net.

Easington  held on for a 2-1 win and were indebted to debutant goalkeeper  Nicky
Lawson  who turned in a man-of-the-match performance following his transfer from
Sunderland RCA.

Willington  were  bottom in each of the last two seasons but are now in the  top
half  of the table following a 3-1 win over Wolviston with goals by Paul Thorns,
Jason White and James Seymour. Kallum Hannah replied from the penalty spot.

Prudhoe  Town  won  for  the  first  time on Saturday  but  failed  to  make  it
back-to-back wins when Stockton Town emerged 3-1 victors.

Joe  Hinchley, Scott Meehan and Jamie May were the matchwinners with Kevin Dixon
(pen) on target for Prudhoe.

The  Cumbrian  derby ended all square. Barry Irving and Gary George had  Cleator
Moor  Celtic  ahead until the 80th minute before Kevin Holliday and  Luke  Smith
rescued a point for Windscale.

RYHOPE  CW reached the final of the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup with victory  over Redcar Athletic in the match of the day on Saturday.

Following  a poor start to the season, Redcar's form has been impressive and the Wearsiders knew they faced a difficult challenge.

But  they rose to the occasion and goals by John Butler (pen) and Jamie Lee (og) saw them home after Richie Playforth had given the home side the lead.

Martin  Swales' side will meet Kirkbymoorside, surprise winners over New  Marske who have led the table for most of the season.

The  Seasiders were rocked, however, when Ryan Rivis and Robert McDermott struck and it was not until the 87th minute that Sean Mackin replied.

Easington  Colliery moved into pole position although they could only share  the points in a six-goals thriller with Darlington Cleveland Bridge.

Fortunes  ebbed  and flowed all afternoon with Danny McLachlan,  Michael  Carter (pen)  and Christian Holliday on target for the Bridge with Barry Turton (2) and Chris Tarn responding.

Ashbrooke  Belford  House remain fourth behind New Marske and Ryhope CW  despite losing for the second time in  a week.

Michael   Weston   (2),  Adam  Blenkinsopp  and  Danny  Lee  were   Willington's match-winners with Lee Andrews and David Baxter on the mark for the Wearsiders.

Prudhoe  Town  had not won in 19 games but finally celebrated  against  Houghton Town.  Richard Bissessur and Michael Pooley were the marksmen.

Jarrow  defeated  Annfield  Plain in an amazing game at Perth Green.  The  hosts looked  home and dry when they led by five goals at the interval thanks to Peter Kane (2), Paul Turrell (2) and Chistie Elliott.

Plain's  fightback  started immediately following the interval and  they  clawed their  way  back to 5-4 with strikes from Roy Gordon, Dominic Elliott, Dean  Lee and Lee Kirkbride.

Indeed, the scores would have been level had Elliott not failed with a penalty.

All  the pressure was on Jarrow and it was only relieved when Liam Clark  scored to make the final tally 6-4.

Boldon  CA  crashed  4-0  at  Wolviston whose hero  was  Kallum  Hannah  with  a hat-trick.  Paul Vickers was their other marksman.

An  only goal by Gavin Wilcox after 10 minutes was sufficient for Stockton  Town who won a poor game at Hartlepool.

EASINGTON Colliery and Ryhope CW closed in on Wearside League leaders New Marske when they both enjoyed comfortable victories last night.

The  Colliers  proved to be too strong for third-bottom Silksworth  although  it was not until the second period that the Wearsiders wilted.

Easington  are  second, just a point behind New Marske with three games in  hand while  Ryhope  CW remain third. Although equal on points with the Colliers  they have played three games more than their rivals.

EASINGTON  Colliery are on course for a double after comfortably seeing off  the challenge from Stockton Town in the Wearside League Cup on Saturday.

The Teessiders  held their high-flying opponents until early in the second  half but  once  Barry  Turton slid the ball into the net, Colliers took  control  and were never troubled.

Adam  McGuinness stretched the lead and shortly before the end Turton was  again on target.

Ryhope  CW were also on cup duty and eased past 10-man Jarrow in the  Sunderland Shipowners' Competition.

It  was  not  a good day for Jarrow's two debutants who had waited so  long  for their first outings.

Goalkeeper  Chris  Hope was beaten on 25 minutes with a John Butler  header  and Nick Pain headed into his own goal shortly afterwards.

Worse  was to follow for the visitors when Mark Brocklehurst was shown a  second yellow card five minutes before the interval.

The  three  leading sides were on cup duty with Marske United going out  of  the North Riding County Cup but Ashbrooke Belford House failed to narrow the gap.

They  remain  fourth after surprisingly going down to Boldon CA who  arrived  at Silksworth with just two wins from 18 games.

Tommy  Dobbing's side was on the back foot from the start following Shaun Reay's early  strike.  Michael Meek doubled the lead and Reay again struck before  Ryan Steel claimed what was no more than a consolation for the hosts.

Silksworth  produced a spirited performance but lost by the odd goal in three at Hartlepool.

Stephen  Thomas converted a penalty before Anthony Rogerson deservedly levelled. The  result  was very much in the balance but it was Pools who came out  on  top with a winning goal by Andy Ross.

Houghton  Town  jumped  two places and are now seventh from the  basement  after their narrow win at Willington where Ben Maddison scored the only goal.

A  hat-trick by Dominic Elliott was the feature of Annfield Plain's victory over Coxhoe  Athletic.  Stephen Kirkbride also found the net with Philip  Bulmer  and Dan Hatton on the mark for the South Durham side.

Switching the fixture to Prudhoe Town did not deter Wolviston who easily claimed the  points courtesy of Kallum Hannah (2) and Ryan Hebb. Prudhoe remain  bottom, still without a win following 19 attempts.

WEARSIDE League

FOLLOWING  six  weeks  of  inactivity, four games went  ahead  on  Saturday  but
another five were postponed.

Houghton  Town failed to celebrate a return to action, losing their bottom-seven
clash with Stockton Town at Leyburn Grove.

David  Johnson was the Teessiders' scoring hero as he twice beat goalkeeper Dean
Caris in the opening 45 minutes.

The  result  leaves Houghton fifth-from-bottom but well clear of  basement  side
Prudhoe Town.

A  stoppage-time  goal by Michael Meek gave Boldon CA's result at  Hartlepool  a
measure of respectability.

Until  he  struck, the South Tynesiders were trailing by three goals  and  never
really threatened the home side.

Carl  Wood  pounced  on  a rebound to give Pools a first-minute  lead  and  soon
afterwards,   Stephen   Chapman  capitalised  as  17-year  old  debutant   Craig
Hutchinson's shot was parried by goalkeeper Lee Jackson.

The South Tynesiders hit back, reducing their deficit through Chris Robinson who
was perfectly placed for a simple tap-in after nine minutes.

It  was  mostly  Hartlepool, however, and in the 12th minute Wood  restored  his
side's two-goals cushion with a shot-come-cross which eluded Jackson.

Four  goals flowed in the first 12 minutes but it was not until the 37th  minute
that  Chapman went past several defenders before crashing the ball into the roof
of the net.

Pools  went  in  4-1 ahead and could easily have added more  goals  as  Chapman,
Stephen  Thomas and Johnny Bolton all hit the woodwork before Meek struck at the
other end.

Redcar  Athletic made a poor start to the season, claiming just seven points out
of  a possible 21 but they started where they left off when they defeated fifth-
top Darlington Cleveland Bridge.

A poor first half produced few openings but the game sprang to life four minutes
into the second period when Jamie Lee netted from six yards.

The  Bridge battled back and threatened to upset Redcar's promotion  aspirations
but  five minutes from time Billy Millington produced a wonderful 20-yard  drive
to  secure  three  crucial  points for the Seasiders.

Redcar  have gained 25 points from their last nine games and are now in the  top
six for the first time this season.

Only  one  of  the  three  scheduled Wearside League cup  ties  went  ahead  and
following  a closely-fought game, Silksworth went out to Willington after  extra
time.

Shaun  Golightly  gave the Wearsiders an interval lead but early in  the  second
period Michael Weston levelled.

There  were  chances  for  both sides to clinch victory but the  tie  went  into
additional  time  and Willington secured their place in the second round with  a
late winner from James Seymour.

RYHOPE CW closed in on leaders New Marske and Easington Colliery when they
narrowly defeated Annfield Plain at Derwent Park.

The Wearsiders had their work cut out and there was only a minute remaining as
Chris Trewick clinched a dramatic winning goal.

It was Trewick who gave Martin Swales' side a fifth-minute lead but within 10
minutes, Annfield were level courtesy of Arron Robertson.

Fortunes ebbed and flowed and there were chances at both ends before Trewick
came up trumps for Ryhope, who are now just a point behind Easington Colliery.

Ashbrooke Belford House are fourth, level on points with Ryhope and they too had
a fight on their hands at Houghton Town.

Despite the conditions, the two sides produced an entertaining game which looked
likely to end in a goal-less draw.

But with just a couple of minutes remaining Tommy Dobbing's team eventually
broke the deadlock.

Houghton goalkeeper Dean Caris made a fantastic save but when the ball rebounded
to Martin Deacon, he made no mistake.

The hosts pushed players forward in search of an equaliser and left the way open
for Lee McAndrew to make sure of the points for Ashbrooke with a stunning
25-yard left-foot shot deep into stoppage time.

Darlington Cleveland Bridge moved into fifth position with an emphatic victory
at home to Willington who were on the back foot once they conceded a brace of
goals to Michael Carter by the 10th minute.

Although Paul Thorne reduced the arrears early in the second half, the Bridge
finished strongly and further goals flowed from Neil Jackson and Neville Fuller.

Following an indifferent start to the season, Redcar Athletic, with ambitions to
join the STL Northern League, are just outside the top six despite being held to
a draw by Windscale.

Richie Playforth fired Redcar ahead and Windscale were dealt a second blow in
the 73rd minute when Dan McDermott was unfortunate to be sent off.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Cumbrians battled on and substitute
Graeme Golding deservedly levelled.

Prudhoe Town remain bottom, the only side yet to win. After taking a halftime
lead courtesy of Lee Best, they trailed to Coxhoe Athletic whose marksmen were
Shaun Laverick and Dan Hatton.

With only 10 minutes left on the clock Adam Dobson restored parity to earn
Prudhoe only their fourth point in 18 games.

ASHBROOKE Belford House remain fourth in the Wearside League, now level
on points with Ryhope CW but Tommy Dobbing's side had their work cut out
before defeating lowly Coxhoe Athletic at Silksworth.

The visitors made a dream start, scoring in the first minute when Chris
Garbutt took advantage of a defensive error and drove the ball wide of goalkeeper
Brett Wilson.

Paul Robertson levelled on 25 minutes with a free kick and 20 minutes from
time David Baxter was on target for the winner.

Ryhope CW's game at Windscale was postponed because of a water-logged pitch
and they now trail second-top Easington Colliery by four points.

The Colliers gained revenge for Saturday's penalty shoot-out defeat in
the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup when they easily defeated Kirkbymoorside 4-1
at Welfare Park.

It was the Yorkshiremen who scored first, however, when Ryan Rivis drove
into the net but their lead lasted only a couple of minutes.

Lee Smith produced a clinical finish from the edge of the penalty area and
in the 62nd minute, Paul Taylor gave Easington the lead.

Two minutes later he was brought down by goalkeeper Adam Masson who was
sent off. Taylor converted the penalty and 15 minutes from time Tim Bowman
completed the scoring.

New Marske enjoy a four-points lead over Easington but the Colliers have
four games in hand and a vastly superior goals difference.

The Seasiders maintained their strong challenge for honours,
surprisingly defeating Willington with ease. Luke Woodhall and Andrew Dawson both
struck twice in a 4-0 victory.

At the other end of the table Prudhoe Town are still winless following a
5-1 defeat at the hands of Redcar Athletic.

An own goal by Sam Young raised the hopes of Prudhoe but the visitors
quickly took control and their supremacy was rewarded with a hat-trick from
Richie Playforth and further goals by Andrew Porritt and James Kesterton.

Darlington Cleveland Bridge missed the opportunity to go fourth when
they surprisingly went down 3-1 to Wolviston whose match-winners were Kallum
Hannah, Michael Arthur and Ryan Hebb. Daniel McLachlan had equalised for the Bridge.

NEW Marske won the match of the day at Ryhope CW and now lead the table by
four points, although Easington Colliery have as many games in hand.

Third-top Ryhope must have sensed victory when they went two goals up in
half an hour with strikes from Richard Jordan and Nathan Johnson.

Just before the interval Andrew Dawson reduced the deficit and after an
hour Paul Venis equalised.

New Marske were now dominant and two goals from brothers Shaun and
Michael Mackin in the last five minutes earned them three crucial points.

Ryhope CW remain third and Ashbrooke Belford House are fourth after sharing
the points with Hartlepool.

Johnny Bolton was an early marksman for Pools before the Wearsiders
equalised with a penalty by Peter Benson who gave goalkeeper Andrew Fletcher no
chance.

Silksworth failed to halt Windscale's championship ambitions. Dean
Rogers converted a 20th-minute penalty when John Hannah was sent off.

The Cumbrians made the numerical advantage count and further goals flowed
before the interval from Rogers and Dan Gullen with a brace.

With 20 minutes remaining, Silksworth suffered another blow when goalkeeper
John McLean had to be substituted. Just before the end Windscale's Alan Blair
was red-carded.

A third-minute goal by Michael Weston proved sufficient for Willington at
home to Jarrow and although they led through David Johnson until the 85th
minute, Stockton Town were beaten by Cleator Moor Celtic.

Gary George restored parity and three minutes from the final whistle
Greg Stainton clinched the winning goal.

Redcar Athletic were the biggest scorers of the day when they hit
Coxhoe Athletic for six yet the visitors were twice ahead thanks to Anthony
Phillipson and Dan Petts.

Andrew Porritt cancelled out the first two goals and in the second half
Redcar took control and romped home as Billy Millington, Michael Hillary (og),
Richie Playforth and Dale Mendum all found the net.

Kallum Hannah was twice on target in Wolviston's victory over Houghton
Town. Daley Clarke threw the visitors a lifeline but Ryan Hebbs' strike ended
their hopes.

Prudhoe Town remain bottom, still without a win. A deflected own goal and
one by Scott Wilson erased two by Boldon CA's Shaun Reay.

Just before the break Kris Robertson restored the advantage to Boldon and in
the second half Finbar Lynch also netted for the South Tynesiders who are now
five points ahead of Prudhoe.

Darlington Cleveland Bridge are in the top six following victory at
Annfield Plain where Dan McLachlan and Adam Wilson both beat goalkeeper Stephen
Kennedy.

Kirkbymoorside reached the Third Round of the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup
with a 7-6 penalty shoot-out against Easington Colliery. The sides had failed to
break the deadlock following extra time.

WITH Easington Colliery and Ryhope CW on cup duty, New Marske took their
chance and leap-frogged the pair, with victory at Boldon CA.

Sean Mackin was an early scorer but Shaun Reay quickly restored parity.
The Seasiders then began to dominate and goals flowed from Mark Dawson (2) and
Tony Renwick (og).

Just before the end Chris Robinson scored a second goal for Boldon but
New Marske were never seriously threatened and celebrated moving to the top of
the table for the first time this season.

Coxhoe Athletic were hit with a seven-goals blitz at Windscale. Dean Rogers
was the top individual marksman of the day, rifling four goals and
others on target were David Dustin, Dan Gullen and Alan Blair.

A late goal by Scott Turner earned Willington a narrow victory at
Houghton Town for whom Brad Freeman (pen) cancelled out Dean Hanson's early
second-half strike.

Darlington Cleveland Bridge also won by the odd goal in three at
Silksworth who led courtesy of Gary Tyzack.

Adam Wilson equalised in the 80th minute and despite having Ben Griffin
sent off, the Bridge claimed an injury-time winner by Daniel McLachlan.

Eight sides were competing for places in the semi finals of the
Sunderland Shipowners' Cup but only three reached the last four.

The tie between Jarrow and Ryhope CW was abandoned after 65 minutes because
of an injury to the referee.

At this stage, the game was finely balanced. Nathan Johnson and Chris
Trewick had given the Wearsiders a two-goals lead but Jarrow hit back through
Paul Terrell and Peter Kane (pen).

Easington Colliery, Kirkbymoorside and Cleator Moor Celtic all went through
by the same 2-0 scoreline.

Paul Taylor scored both goals in Easington's victory at Stockton Town who
held out until the 70th minute. Taylor produced a clinical left-foot finish
before converting a penalty.

Daryl Rivis headed Kirkbymoorside in front and Rob McDirmid booked his
side's place in the semi finals at home to Annfield Plain.

Robbie Fowler scored both Cleator Moor Celtic's goals at Redcar Athletic
who had the opportunity to reduce the deficit but Nicky Ward fired wide from
the penalty spot.

Wolviston took Crook Town, from the STL Northern League Second Division,
to the wire before going out of the Durham Challenge Cup. Kevin Devine scored
the only goal.

A SUPERB performance by Lee Andrews was the feature of Ashbrooke Belford House's
emphatic victory over Darlington Cleveland Bridge which enabled Tommy Dobbing's
side to remain in fourth position.

David Scott gave the Wearsiders a 10th-minute lead and another 50 minutes
elapsed before Andrews went to work.

At that stage, Daniel McLachlan had equalised but once Andrews restored
the advantage for his team, there was no stopping him.

He plundered another three goals and not surprisingly was named Man of
the Match.

Easington Colliery remain out in front when another regular scorer, Paul
Taylor bagged a brace of goals at Wolviston.

He was an early marksman but Ryan Hebb quickly restored parity. Michael
Graver regained the advantage for the Colliers and nine minutes from time, Taylor
made sure of the points for Easington who have won 11 and drawn two of their
13 games.

Teams from the North East often find it difficult playing in Cumbria but
this was not the case for second-top Ryhope CW who coasted to victory at Cleator
Moor Celtic.

John Butler headed in after 20 minutes and although it took Ryhope another
hour to double their lead, they were never troubled. Chris Trewick made it two
on 80 minutes and five minutes from time Clayton Davis struck from 25 yards
following an excellent build-up.

Andrew Plaice threw Silksworth a lifeline when he cancelled out John
Ludlow's early goal at Annfield Plain.

There were chances for both teams during the second period and it was the
home side who accepted two with Dean Lee and Shaun Sagar guiding their team
to victory.

Houghton Town returned to league action and gave a much improved display
despite losing by the only goal to in-form Redcar Town, whose match-winner was
Stephen Thompson.

Jarrow were also disappointed with their previous performance but bounced
back against Coxhoe Athletic.

Peter Kane netted from close range after only 12 minutes and Phil
Bulmer levelled for Coxhoe a minute into the second half.

Mid-way through the second period Chris Lunn regained the advantage for
Jarrow who made sure of victory with Kane's late penalty.

Kirkbymoorside won a seven-goals thriller at Prudhoe Town with a
last-minute winner by Sarjo Cham, his second of the game. Rob McDirmid and Jonathan
Brown also struck with Chris Waistell (2) and Andy Hoban on the mark for
the Tynesiders.

New Marske were indebted to the Mackin twins who both found the net in
their side's victory over Windscale who led through Dean Rogers until the 84th
minute.

Willington's James Seymour beat goalkeeper Adrian Swann to earn a point
at Stockton Town who were ahead with Danny Kitchener's volley which rocketed
into the top of the net.

Despite leading with a brace of goals from Shaun Reay, Boldon CA went out
of the Durham Challenge Cup to Hartlepool United Reserves whose
second-half matchwinners were Stephen Snaith, Billy Beckford and Callum Hassan.

Andy  Hall  and  Paul Taylor quickly had the Colliers ahead and  in  the  second

WITH most sides on cup duty, only one league fixture went ahead and the outcome
had a bearing on the top of the table.

Ryhope CW faced a difficult challenge at Kirkbymoorside but came through
unscathed when an only goal by Lee McMahon on six minutes earned them three
crucial points.

The Wearsiders moved into second place, level on points with leaders Easington
Colliery who have two games in hand on their nearest rivals.

Easington meanwhile, had little difficulty reaching the second round of the
Monkwearmouth Charity Cup.

A hat-trick by Paul Taylor was the feature of a 4-1 victory at Silksworth. Chris
Hall was the other marksman while Eoin Shannon claimed a consolation for Steven
Smith's team.

Six ties went ahead in the League Cup. After showing improvement in their last
two games, Boldon CA were hopeful of defeating Stockton Town but it was the
visitors who came out on top in a seven-goals thriller.

Joe Hinchley (2) and Scott Hume had them well ahead at the interval but Chris
Robertson and Mark Williams threw CA a lifeline.

James Ward struck at the other end but Robertson netted his seventh goal in two
matches to set up an exciting finale. Boldon pressed relentlessly but the
Teessiders held on for a 4-3 victory.

Hartlepool led through Ian Davies at the break but paid the penalty for failing
to convert numerous chances. Cleator Moor Celtic staged a strong second-half
rally to romp home with goals from Craig Scott (2), Craig Padley and David
Williams.

John Richardson (2) and Danny Lee eased Willington home against Darlington
Cleveland Bridge who led at the interval courtesy of Paul Legg and Andrew
Caldwell.

David Turner (pen) and Shaun Sagar were Annfield Plain's matchwinners at Prudhoe
Town for whom Andrew Clarkson equalised.

Andy Porritt and Billy Millington, with a brace, appeared to book Redcar
Athletic's place in the next round but Wolviston hit back with two strikes from
Kallum Hannah and in a grandstand finish, Redcar just made it.

Ashbrooke Belford House exited at Jarrow who won with a 119th-minute goal from
Peter Kane. Dean Patton (pen) had given the home side the lead which they held
until a minute from the end of normal time when Chris Charlton levelled.

JARROW moved into third place in the Wearside League with a 3-1
victory in front of an above average crowd at Silksworth last night.

The South Tynesiders made a dream start taking the lead through
Anthony Chilton after just four minutes and when Peter Kane made it two after
32 minutes, the home side faced an uphill battle.

They were given a lifeline as Anthony Rogers struck before the interval
but midway through the second period, a second goal by Chilton ended the
home side's hopes.

It was a highly disputed goal awarded when the assistant referee signalled
the ball had crossed the line.

FOR once, leading scorer John Butler didn't score but six of his team-mates
did when Ryhope CW surged into the second round of the Sunderland Shipowners'
Cup with an emphatic victory over Willington on Saturday.

Chris Trewick and Roy Conlon were first-half marksmen when the visitors
had chances to go in level, but it was a different scenario after the break.

Ryhope took control and further goals flowed from Philip Hall, David Newby,
John Toomey and James Fairley.

Leaders Easington Colliery defeated Hartlepool for the second time in four
days - again by a two-goals margin.

Dale Crawford scored direct from a free-kick in the sixth minute and on
the stroke of half-time Steve Manson volleyed in from 25 yards for the
equaliser.

Play ebbed and flowed and it was the Colliers who went through with two
goals from Andy Hall.

Wolviston exited at Cleator Moor Celtic despite scoring first courtesy of
Kallum Hannah.

The Teessiders had David Ryder sent off after 55 minutes and from then on
Celtic took over and romped home with strikes from Darren Johnston, Ben Bateson,
Gary George and Chris Thornton.

Three of the four ties produced 15 goals but just one by Ryan Rivis
was sufficient for Kirkbymoorside against New Marske.

Houghton Town crashed to a six-goals mauling at Boldon CA, who won for only
the first time in 14 games.

Chris Robertson produced the performance of the day, scoring five of his
team's six goals with Mark Williams adding to the woes of Houghton, for whom
Neil Maddison claimed a consolation.

Ashbrooke Belford House moved into second position and although just two
points adrift of Easington Colliery, they have played four games more than the
leaders.

Chris Charlton earned Tommy Dobbing's side a point at Annfield Plain who
led through Roy Gordon.

Despite a lack of goals, Silksworth and Windscale were engaged in
an entertaining game while Dean Patton (2) and Liam Clarke earned Jarrow the
points in their home fixture with Prudhoe Town, who are now bottom.

Scott Hine (2), Ladi Kazeem and Rhys Connelly had Stockton Town four goals
up before Paul Wilson claimed a consolation for Coxhoe Athletic.

Darlington Cleveland Bridge missed the opportunity to go second when they
lost to Redcar Athletic, whose marksman was James Kesterton with a hat-trick.

RYHOPE CW moved into second position, only three points behind Easington
Colliery with last night's victory over one-time leaders Annfield Plain.

James Fairley buried a low right-foot shot into the net from 20 yards and early
in the second period John Butler converted a penalty awarded after he had been
fouled.

Martin Swales' side enjoyed most of the possession and only an outstanding
performance by visiting goalkeeper Stephen Kennedy kept his side in with a
chance.

Easington Colliery quickly bounced back from the disappointment of losing in the
FA Carlsberg Vase at the weekend.

They too won by a 2-0 margin in the local derby with Hartlepool. Barry Turton
gave goalkeeper Mark Bell no chance with a tremendous shot from the edge of the
penalty area and eight minutes later Adam McGuinnes headed through a crowded
goalmouth.

Ashbrooke Belford House are up to third, level on points with Ryhope CW.

Tommy Dobbing's side overcame the loss of Mark Egglestone, who was sent off in
the 50th minute after receiving two yellow cards.

Ashbrooke goalkeeper Brett Wilson saved a second-minute penalty and just before
the interval Michael Charlton opened the scoring with an exquisite lob from long
range.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Ashbrooke were rarely troubled and sealed
victory with two goals in the last 15 minutes from Peter Benson, one from the
penalty spot.

Inconsistent Houghton Town went down 5-1 to Wolviston, who won for only the
third time.

Jamie Owens struck a hat-trick and although Simon Williamson threw the hosts a
lifeline, the Teessiders finished strongly with Ryan Hebb bagging a brace of
goals.

Boldon CA claimed their first point in 13 games and were close to winning all
three against fourth-top Darlington Cleveland Bridge.

Shaun Reay fired the South Tynesiders into an eighth-minute lead which could
have been doubled had Bridge goalkeeper Michael Thraves not saved a penalty by
his opposite number Gary Frater.

The miss proved costly and five minutes from time Danny McLachlan levelled to
deny Boldon the victory which they richly deserved.

Danny Lee was an early marksman for Willington at Hall Lane but Coxhoe Athletic
quickly hit back to finish 4-1 winners courtesy of Philip Bulmer, Paul Cantwell,
Graeme Richardson and Michael Hillary.

There was an amazing game at Kimberley Park where New Marske defeated Prudhoe
Town 7-5.

It looked all over for the Seasiders when Prudhoe romped into a four-goals lead
thanks to Gavin Lisle (2), Brett McGill and Ian Costello.

Although Andrew Dawson and Andrew Rowe reduced the arrears, Prudhoe went in at
the interval 5-2 in front as McGill claimed his second goal of the night.

It was a different scenario in the second period, however, when New Marske
scored on five occasions. Dawson took his personal tally to four with the Mackin
twins Michael and Shaun also finding the net.

Shaun Laverick who was deemed to be the last defender.

Despite  being  numerically disadvantaged, Coxhoe held their own until the  80th
minute when Neil Maddison headed past goalkeeper Tom Orton.

New Marske reached the Third Round of the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup with victory
at  Hartlepool  where  they led thanks to Shaun Mackin and Luke  Goodall  before

Redcar  Athletic  made  it four wins on the trot. Daniel Drazdauskas  and  Billy

off four minutes from time.

Easington  Colliery  were the League's last remaining hope in the  FA  Carlsberg

Ashbrooke  Belford House are fourth following victory over Cleator Moor  Celtic.
The  Wearsiders went ahead after just two minutes through Mark Green but it  was
not until the last minute that Lee Andrews made sure of the points.

At  the other end of the table Boldon CA are still pointless. They lost for  the
12th  consecutive  game  despite  being  in front  courtesy  of  Shaun  Reay  at
Kirkbymoorside who then replied four times through Ryan Rivis (2), Damon Cox and
a Martin Cooper own goal. Chris Robertson converted a late penalty for Boldon.

Prudhoe  Town remain second from the basement after they shared the points  with
Silksworth  for  whom Andy Bowes headed in after 35 minutes. Lee  Best  restored
parity with an excellent volley.

Willington  defeated  Annfield Plain with a 76th-minute penalty by Scott  Turner

EASINGTON Colliery extended their lead at the top of the table to four
points when they crushed nearest rivals New Marske.

A close result was expected but in the event, the Colliers ran riot,
scoring seven times without conceding a goal to their hapless
opponents.

There was no hint of a goals avalanche at the halfway stage, however,
when the Seasiders trailed to strikes from Paul Taylor and Barry
Turton.

The turning point came around the hour when three goals flowed in the
space of six minutes. Taylor completed his hat-trick, Turton scored his
second goal of the afternoon and in the late stages, Chris Hall and
Adam McGuiness added to the woes of New Marske.

Easington were not the biggest scorers of the day, however. That honour
went to Windscale who ripped Houghton Town apart to finish with double
figures.

Jordan Lee and Dean Rogers rifled hat-tricks with Laurie Black (2),
Michael Farrer, Graeme Goulding and Dan Rowlands also on target leading
Windscale to an 11-1 victory. Houghton's only reply came in the last
minute from Paul Lamb.

Ashbrooke Belford House were also in scoring mode and they hit Prudhoe
Town for six. Dale Wells, Mark Green, Michael Charlton, Lee Davidson
and Martin Deacon had them five goals up by half time.

Jonathan Stephenson reduced the deficit but Michael Charlton quickly
restored Ashbrooke's five-goals cushion and it wasn't until the 89th
minute that Andrew Davison claimed a second consolation goal for the
Tynesiders.

An early strike by Michael Carter set Darlington Cleveland Bridge up
for victory over Coxhoe Athletic. Anthony McLachlan then twice found
the net to help propel the Bridge into fourth place, equal on points
with Windscale.

Willington just had the edge on Silksworth, winning by the odd goal in
five at the end of a game in which fortunes ebbed and flowed.

Martin Hopps, Graeme Lazenby and Daniel Lee were on the mark for the
hosts with James Hepstonstall and Richard Maughan replying for
Silksworth.

An only goal by Dean Millington proved sufficient for Redcar Athletic
at Boldon CA and Hartlepool also won by the narrowest of margins
defeating Kirkbymoorside with a spectacular 30-yard effort from Carl
Wood.

Jarrow reached the next round of the Durham Challenge Cup when they
defeated Seaham Red Star from the STL Northern League Second Division.

Aaron Croft fired Seaham in front and after Peter Kane levelled, he was
the toast of Jarrow with his late winner.

Wolviston have managed just two wins in the league but they were too
good for Annfield Plain although they needed extra time before winning
5-2.

Callum Hannah (3), Ryan Hebb and Stephen Little were the matchwinners
with Roy Gordon and John Ludlow replying for the Plain.

RYHOPE  CW moved into fourth position in the Wearside League when they went nap at home to Kirkbymoorside.

Richard  Jordan  celebrated his return following a five-week lay-off by scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes.

Damien  Cox  reduced  the  visitors'  arrears but  there  was  no  stopping the Wearsiders  who  ended  5-1  winners with second-half goals  from  David Newby, Martin Metcalfe and James Fairley.

Jarrow  are third on goal difference from Ryhope CW after coming from behind to claim a point at Cleator Moor Celtic.

Glynn  Edwards  and Craig Padley gave the Cumbrians the cushion of  a two-goals lead  and  after Christie Elliott reduced the deficit, Liam Clarke  levelled in
the final minutes.

HOUGHTON  Town  trailed  for  75 minutes in last night's  Durham  Challenge Cup Preliminary  Round  tie  with Ashbrooke Belford House at  Silksworth  but still managed an extra-time 3-1 victory.

It  looked  as if Peter Benson's 10th-minute strike would prove  sufficient for Tommy  Dobbing's team but five minutes from the end of normal time, Chris Curtis equalised.

Early  in  additional  time  David  Keighley fired Houghton  in  front  and the visitors'  place  in the next round was secured with Brad Freeman's spectacular goal five minutes from the end.

Washington  were also involved in an exciting tie with Easington Colliery which was decided by Nick Quinn's winner with virtually the last kick of the game.

Graeme  Liddle gave the Newtowners an early advantage but the Colliers then went in front courtesy of Barry Turton and David Doughty.

Quinn  threw Washington a lifeline with his equalising goal and then became the toast  of  his new team mates as he struck in the last minute to  celebrate his debut following a move from Boldon CA.

Peterlee Town went out to Hartlepool in a seven-goals feast where fortunes ebbed and flowed throughout the game.

Peter  Elliott  and Peter Crawford (pen) had the home side two goals up  by the 22nd minute but gradually Pools came more into the picture.

Bob  Smith reduced the deficit and two goals from David Manson had the visitors in front for the first time.

Craig  McManus  restored parity but Pools scraped home with a late  winner from Stephen Chapman.

Brandon  United  were hit for double figures by Gateshead at  the International Stadium.  Ian  Bogie's  side roared into a seven-goals interval lead  and there was  no  respite for goalkeeper Richard Heineger as the home side romped  to an 11-0 victory.

Nathan  Fisher,  who moved to Gateshead from Chester le Street during the close season,  rifled  four  goals, Brian Wake struck a hat-trick  with  Alex
Francis (2),  Stephen  Baptiste  and Luke Gilbert completing a miserable night  for the Durham side.

Darren  Richardson  struck a low drive to give Bishop Auckland a seventh-minute advantage  but it took two goals in three minutes from Stephen Salvin and Aaron
Wearmouth  just before the end to stave off a spirited performance by Darlington Cleveland Bridge.

Willington  conceded  goals to Darlington's Dan Burn, Paul Grainger  and Jordan Marshall  at The Northern Echo Arena before Carl Thompson claimed a consolation
scoring the best goal of the four with a tremendous 25-yard drive.

Horden  CW went out of the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup at Crook Town for whom Chris  Baxter  and  Andrew  Appleby beat goalkeeper  Grant  Herbert  inside
the opening half hour.

Following  an  uncertain start the Colliers played some good football  but were unable to break down a resolute home defence.

Morpeth  Town, without a win in the STL Northern League Second Division, sprang a  surprise,  defeating table-topping Guisborough Town with goals  from
Matthew Wade and Wyn Fremlin. David Onions replied for the home team with an 88th-minute
penalty.

Consett  are  the  new leaders in the STL Northern League First  Division.
They defeated Billingham Town with second-half goals from Jonjo Dickman, Gavin Barton and Lewis Teasdale.

After  losing  to Billingham Synthonia in the FA Carlsberg Vase at the weekend,
Newcastle  Benfield  returned  to Teesside and gained a measure  of revenge.
A goal after   19 minutes from Scott Fenwick enabled them to maintain the only 100 per cent record in the two divisions.

Top  four sides Bedlington Terriers and Shildon shared the points but it took  a
magnificent  performance  by goalkeeper Kevin Morton, playing his first game
of the season, to keep Terriers in the game.

Jamie  Harwood  fired  Shildon in front before debutant Wayne  Gredziak,
signed this  week  from  Bishop Auckland, restored parity. Thereafter,  Morton
made  a string of outstanding saves as Shildon camped in their opponents' half.

The  shock  result of the night was Dunston UTS's 3-0 defeat at  West
Allotment Celtic  whose  marksmen  were Stephen Buzzeo, Stephen Forster and  debutant
Lee Hamilton.

EASINGTON Colliery will fly the flag for the Wearside League in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Carlsberg Vase following their exciting victory in a seven-goals thriller at Hebburn Town.

The Colliers romped into a four-goals lead by the 35th minute courtesy of Paul Taylor, with a brace, Barry Turton and Watson but when Gary McCartney rifled a hat-trick, the outcome was wide open.

Easington though held on and enjoyed a double celebration since the two sides immediately below them in the table failed to win.

New Marske are second after conceding a two-goals lead to Darlington Cleveland Bridge whose marksmen were Andrew Cauldwell and Nick Enfield. Daniel Jones and Mark Dawson had the Seasiders in front in the opening half hour.

Annfield Plain, who were temporarily in pole position, are down to third following defeat at Redcar Athletic for whom Jamie Lee and James Kesterton netted.
Jarrow just can't stop scoring goals and they made it 19 in three games to jump into fourth position.

Their latest spree came at Prudhoe Town where Christopher Lunn, with a brace, Chris Elliott, Daryl Donnelly and Shaun Combs all beat goalkeeper Ross Thomas. Gavin Lisle claimed a consolation for the West Tyne team.

Brothers Malcolm and Michael Reay were in charge at Boldon CA for the first time but were unable to steer the South Tynesiders to victory at Stockton Town.

Scott Hine struck a hat-trick with Daniel Bannantyne also on target while Michael Meek (pen) and James Hudson responded for Boldon.

Just when it appeared that the derby between Silksworth and Houghton Town would end goal-less, two goals were scored in the final minutes.

Andrew Place must have thought that his 89th-minute goal would be sufficient for Silksworth but deep into stoppage time, Ross Kennedy equalised with a direct free kick.

Ashbrooke Belford House rallied to claim a point at Wolviston who were in front by the 13th minute thanks to Ryan Head and Callum Hannah.

Peter Benson threw Tommy Dobbing's side a lifeline and 16 minutes from the end Martin Deacon levelled.

John Butler and James Fairley had Ryhope CW comfortably ahead but when Kevin Mulgrew struck for Coxhoe Athletic, an exciting final 10 minutes ensued before the Wearsiders clinched all three points.

Craig Padley and Jack Stainton were Cleator Moor Celtic's matchwinners at Willington while Chris Archer and Mark Ellison netted for Hartlepool at Windscale who twice equalised through skipper Dan Gullen and Dean Rogers.

HOUGHTON Town will be hoping they don't have to visit Jarrow again this season.

They returned to Perth Green on Saturday in the Sunderland Shipowners' Cup and once again were completely overwhelmed.

It wasn't quite so bad at the weekend as it was a week earlier. Then, Houghton were on the receiving end of an eight-goals mauling - the return fixture resulted in a six-goals defeat.
Strangely, it took Jarrow 43 minutes to break the deadlock but from then on it was one-way traffic. Peter Kane (2), Chris Lunn (2), Paul Tyrell and Christie Elliott all beat overworked goalkeeper Craig Chapman.

There were five goals at Silksworth but four of them were for Redcar Athletic.

Shaun Smith gave the Colliers a second-minute lead and it wasn't until the 49th minute that the Seasiders levelled courtesy of James Kesterton.

Billy Millington accepted a lucky bounce and fired Redcar in front before two goals in the last nine minutes from Andy Bell and Jamie Lee ended any hopes Silksworth harboured of making a comeback.

Willington are a much improved side this season and they romped to a 5-1 win at home to Coxhoe Athletic.

Danny Lee, Michael Weston, James Towers (pen), Carl Thompson and Jonathan Staff were on target with Daniel Curry claiming a consolation for Coxhoe.

John Ludlow bagged a first-half brace leading Annfield Plain to victory over Windscale.

The second period was more evenly contested and Laurie Black threw the Cumbrians a lifeline before Paul Gibbs' goal proved pivotal to the outcome.

Rob McDermott and Ryan Rivis gave Kirkbymoorside a two-goals cushion but David Baxter's goal in the 82nd minute for Ashbrooke Belford House opened up the tie.

Rivis though scored again and the game was into stoppage time as Kenny Taylor claimed what was no more than a consolation for the Wearsiders.

Bottom-of-the-table Boldon CA, who have yet to gain a point, almost caused an upset at Hartlepool who only just edged a seven-goals thriller.

Chris Archer, Johnny Bolton and Shaun Atkinson (2) struck for Pools who had Shaun Ross sent off early in the tie.

Michael Meek, Finbar Lynch and Mike Alexander replied for the South Tynesiders who just failed to take the game into extra time.

A Scott Hine hat-trick earned Stockton Town their place in the next round at the expense of Darlington Cleveland Bridge whose only reply came from a Scott Meehan own goal.
A last-minute winner by Callum Hannah ended Prudhoe Town's hopes at home to Wolviston whose other marksmen were David Ryder and Ryan Hebb. Lee Best and David Drinkall had winless Prudhoe ahead at one stage.

Two games were played in the league and Easington Colliery moved into pole position with victory at Cleator Moor Celtic who scored first courtesy of Chris Thornton.

Chris Tarn and Phil Taylor turned the tables before Celtic were reduced to nine men in the space of three minutes.

Craig Corkhill was first to go and goalkeeper Craig Devine followed him when he fouled Taylor who converted the resultant penalty.

John Toomey earned Ryhope CW a point at New Marske who led with Mark Dawson's first-half header.

RYHOPE CW gained revenge for a recent defeat by Windscale when they met for a second time on Wearside, in the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup.

John Butler headed the hosts in front and after Dan McDermott levelled, Stephen Bagley struck a last-minute winner for Martin Swales' team.

A 90th-minute goal by Richard Playforth proved sufficient for Redcar Athletic at Stockton Town but the other three ties produced a surfeit of goals.

Boldon CA went out at Hartlepool whose marksmen were Johnny Bolton, Shaun Atkinson, Chris Archer and Mark Ellison.

New Marske also won by a four-goals margin when they entertained Coxhoe Athletic. Shaun Mackin (2), his brother Michael and Josh Mitchell all beat goalkeeper Tom Orton.

Last week, Annfield Plain toppled Kirkbymoorside from pole position but it was the Yorkshiremen who came out on top following a five-goals thriller.

David Turner converted a penalty and on the stroke of half time Rob McDirmid levelled for the home team.

Turner restored the advantage to Plain only for Martin Cooper to fire in a free kick for the equaliser.

Cooper then had a penalty saved by Stephen Kennedy but atoned four minutes into stoppage time when he drove in the winner.

Three games were played in the League. Ashbrooke Belford House lost 2-1 at Cleator Moor Celtic whose scorers were Chris Thornton and Gavin Evans. Chris Charlton had equalised for the Wearsiders.

Houghton Town, buoyant following their performance in the previous game, suffered an eight-goals rout at Jarrow where Paul Tyrel, with a hat-trick, Chris Lunn (2), Liam Parke, Shaun Coombes and Peter Kane all beat goalkeeper Steve Packer.

Paul Vickers and Callum Hannah netted for Wolviston in a 2-2 draw with Darlington CB whose marksmen were Dean Fuller and Anthony McClelland.

Not  many  sides travel to Cumbria mid-week and return happy but  Houghton  Town
were a jovial lot on their long trek home last night.

Difficulty  in  players  leaving work early often means teams are  weakened  and
Houghton  were  no  exception  but  at the end  of  a  cracking  encounter  they
celebrated a 4-3 victory.

Celtic  were  quickly into their stride, taking a 10th minute lead through  Greg
Stainton.

It  took the visitors until the 31st minute for Shaun Graham to level and  after
Ross  Freeman fired Houghton in front from the spot, the hosts equalised on  the
stroke of half-time as Stainton drove past goalkeeper Carl Chapman.

Immediatley  on  resuming, Freeman restored the advantage to Houghton  only  for
Barry Armfield to restore parity following a free-kick.

With  time  running  out it appeared the teams would share the  points  but  Ian
McPherson  got  ahead to 'keeper Craig Devine to earn the visitors their  fourth
win of the season.

It's  been a topsy-turvey start for Ashbrooke Belford House who look as if  they
are now running into consistent form.

They  produced  a good performance defeating Stockton Town with a  fifth  minute
strike  by  Peter  Benson  who sealed victory with a second goal  in  the  final
minute.

Annfield  Plain extended their lead at the top of the table to three points  but
they were taken to the wire by Jarrow at Derwent Park.

John  Gibbs  and Aaron Robertson gave them the cushion of a two-goals  lead  but
when  Liam  Clark replied, Jarrow exerted pressure in the late stages which  the
Plain survived.

Easington  Colliery  are  second after conceding the last 100 per  cent  record.
Windscale,  who  continue to impress, were worth a point at Welfare  Park  where
they were in front until the 81st minute.

Michael Farrer delivered a clinical finish wide of goalkeeper Dean Caris but the
Colliers  were  saved by Barry Turnton's equally impressive strike from  outside
the penalty area.

Silksworth  fielded  a depleted side at Ryhope CW who romped to a 6-0 win.  Adam
McGuinness  shot  home  past  goalkeeper John McClean and  soon  afterwards  the
visitors defence was again split, leaving John Butler with a simply tap-in.

Before the break Jake Moan made it three and the goals continued to flow in  the
second  period.  Captain Greg Swansbury, Paul Kane and Butler added to the  woes
of Silksworth, who have now conceded 19 times in eight games.

Boldon  CA,  the only side yet to claim a point, have now leaked 33 goals  after
they succumbed to a seven-goals mauling at Coxhoe Athletic, who had managed just
seven goals in their previous seven games.

Indy  Singh, with a brace, Shaun Laverick, James Moohan, Dan Hatton, Phil Butler
and Graeme Richardson all found the net.

Wolviston  defeated out-of-sorts Redcar Athletic, who pre-season were tipped  as
promotion candidates.

Paul  Vickers  and Anthony Brown were on the mark for Wolviston and it  was  not
until the final minute that Jimmy Lee replied.

An  only  goal  by Luke Jenkinson proved sufficient for  Kirkbymoorside  against
Darlington Cleveland Bridge, for whom Michael Carter failed with a penalty.

Shaun  Ross fired Hartlepool ahead but Kristian Kamarra claimed a valuable point
for third-top New Marske.

Scott  Turner  and Michael Weston netted for Willington in their 2-2  draw  with
Prudhoe Town whose marksmen were Lee Best and Brett McGill.

EASINGTON Colliery, the only side with a 100 per cent record, are just a point behind new leaders Annfield Plain after recording their fifth successive victory, at Houghton Town.

The Colliers made a dream start, scoring twice in the opening 16 minutes through Paul Taylor and Lee Smith.

Home goalkeeper Carl Chapman's heroics prevented his side from going further behind but he was powerless as Taylor struck again.

Houghton produced a much improved performance during the second period but with five minutes remaining, man-of-the-match Taylor completed his hat-trick and all the host's had to show was a last-minute consolation by Ross Kennedy.

Ryhope CW won their first three matches but have lost the last two following defeat at the hands of Ashbrooke Belford House.

Tommy Dobbing's side has been inconsistent so far but rose to the occasion. Grant Bulmer headed them in front midway through the second period but the outcome was on a knife-edge until Adam Hopps made sure in the last minute.

Silksworth lost for the fourth time and Coxhoe Athletic celebrated their first win.

Indy Singh headed a free kick wide of Silksworth goalkeeper John McLean who was beaten again 10 minutes from time by a rasping 25-yard shot from Shaun Laverick. Eight minutes from the end Singh was red-carded but the home side failed to make the advantage count.

Boldon CA, who hope to make a managerial appointment in the near future, are the only side yet to get off the mark. They were hit for six at Windscale as the goals flowed from Graeme Goulding (2), Dan Gullen (2), Jordan Lee and Laurie Black.

A Michael Meek penalty was the only response from Boldon who have conceded 26 goals in seven games - more than any other side.

Jarrow would have gone third-top had they defeated Darlington CB but it was the visitors who emerged victors by the odd goal in five.

Dean Fuller, Jack Johns and Michael Carter were their marksman with Stephen Cockburn and Kevin Clarke replying for the South Tynesiders.

Annfield Plain are the new leaders after they edged previous incumbents Kirkbymoorside at Derwent Park.

Luke Jenkinson netted for the visitors and it took Plain 50 minutes to draw level courtesy of Craig Suggett. With 10 minutes remaining Paul Henderson clinched the winner.

New Marske are third following victory over Cleator Moor Celtic with an only goal by Shaun Mackin and Dean Hanson's strike proved sufficient for Willington at Redcar Athletic.

Lee Butterworth, Kilpatrick (pen) and Hannah earned Wolviston their first win at Stockton Town for whom Tom Hinchley found the net.

Prudhoe Town are second-bottom with just one point from 18. Their latest defeat came at the hands of Hartlepool Town whose matchwinners were Shaun Ross, with a brace and Stephen Manson. Brendan McGill was on target for the Tynesiders.

WEARSIDE League by MALCOLM PRATT

DESPITE  fielding  a severely depleted side, Silksworth won for only  the  second time when they defeated Darlington Cleveland Bridge last night.

The  home side have made a useful start to their first season in the league  and when  Nick  Enfield volleyed past goalkeeper John McLean after just 15  minutes, it looked as if they might be on their way to a fourth win in five games.

But  Steven  Smith's side turned the tables and before the interval  were  level as Chris Wilson rounded goalkeeper Michael Thraves for a simple tap-in.

Silksworth's  winning  goal  came  on  the hour as  David  McKinley  produced  a clinical finish which flashed into the back of the net.

Ashbrooke  Belford  House at last struck form following an indifferent start  to the season which had seen them score only three times in four games.

Tommy  Dobbing's  team more than doubled their goals tally against Wolviston  at Silksworth.

They  had  the incentive of a fifth-minute volley from Lee Andrews and  went  in two  goals  ahead  following  Peter  Bentham's  delicate  chip  over  goalkeeper Michael Thackeray.

Although  Paul Vickers reduced the deficit, there was no stopping Ashbrooke  and two  goals  in  five  minutes from David Baxter and Adam  Hopps  earned  them  a comprehensive victory.

Ryhope  CW  conceded  their 100 per cent record when Windscale won  by  the  odd goal in three on Wearside.

Martin  Swales'  side was on the back foot when they conceded two goals  in  the opening 35 minutes to Dan Gullen and Dion Barnes.

The  Cumbrians  dominated  the  first  period but were  second  best  after  the interval.  However,  for  all their pressure Ryhope managed just one  goal  from Adam McGuinness, although Joe Walton did hit the crossbar.

Despite   being  without  seven  of  the  side  which  played  at  the  weekend, Hartlepool were still good enough to defeat Houghton Town.

Carl  Wood  scored  the only goal, turning in Greg Jackson's cross at  the  back post midway through the first half.

Managerless  Boldon  CA  suffered a fifth consecutive  defeat  when  Willington, wooden  spoonists  in  the  last two seasons, won for the  third  time  in  four attempts.

It  was  a close call though and the only goal came on the stroke of  half  time as Adam Blenkinsopp drilled a low shot beyond goalkeeper Gary Frater.

Jarrow  have  made  a good start and comfortably saw off the challenge from  New Marske.  Liam  Clark  was  their first half marksman before  Chris  Lunn  netted twice in the second period.

Annfield  Plain  are  second top, equal on points with  Kirkbymoorside  although the North West Durham side had to settle for a point at Prudhoe Town.

Scott  Wallace  fired them in front on 40 minutes and after the break, Lee  Best equalised to earn Prudhoe their first point of the season.

Coxhoe  Athletic  returned pointless from Cumbria where Cleator Moor Celtic  won with an only goal by Craig Scott.

Kirkbymoorside   moved  into  pole  position,  defeating  Redcar  Athletic  with strikes  by  Ian  Mudd  (og)  and Damon Cox  before  Stuart  Poulter  claimed  a consolation deep into stoppage time.

SILKSWORTH  celebrated  their  first  win of the season  when  they  coasted  to victory at Boldon CA, who are still pointless.

Chris  Wilson  fired them in front on the stroke of half time and when  Jonathan Fox  added  a  second  goal in the 71st minute, the  South  Tynesiders  faced  a formidable challenge.

Any  hopes  they  harboured  of making a comeback ended  when  they  conceded  a penalty which Dean Hannah converted.

Ryhope  CW  made  it three wins out of three at Wolviston but it was  not  until the last minute that an own goal by Anthony Brown made sure of the points.

Clayton  Davis  was  an  early  scorer for  the  Wearsiders  and  Callum  Hannah replied. McGuinness restored the advantage to Martin Swales' team and the result was on a knife edge until the 90th minute.

Houghton  Town  led  by three goals at Darlington Cleveland Bridge  but  had  to withstand late pressure to win by the odd goal in five.

Shaun  Graham (2) and David Keighley (pen) appeared to have the visitors on  the road  to  a comfortable win but when Anthony McLachlan and Michael Carter  (pen) beat keeper Carl Chapman, the outcome was wide open.

Easington  Colliery managed just one goal from Paul Taylor at Hartlepool but  it was sufficient to extend their 100 per cent record to four games.

They  have  scored 17 times and conceded just once and lead the table  on  goals difference from New Marske and Annfield Plain.

The  Seasiders easily defeated Ashbrooke Belford House, who have not managed  to extend  their  excellent pre-season form into league games. Shaun Mackin  scored all three goals as Tommy Dobbing's side suffered a third defeat.

Paul  Henderson  (3) and William Smith earned Annfield Plain the points at  home to  Windscale  who  were always in with a chance with goals by Dean  Rogers  (2) and Laurie Black.

Dean  Patton  (2)  and Christie Elliott were the marksmen for Jarrow  at  Coxhoe Athletic for whom Chris Garbutt replied from the penalty spot.

Willington,  wooden  spoonists  in  the last two seasons, are  up  to  mid-table after  winning  for the second time. Jonathan Staff's late strike proved  enough at home to Stockton Town.

Kirkbymoorside  were  deposed  as leaders when they went down  at  Cleator  Moor Celtic for whom Darren Johnson scored the only goal.

There  was  no  shortage of goals, however, at Redcar Athletic who  hit  Prudhoe Town  for  six.  James Kesterton, with a hat-trick, Daniel Drazdauskas  (2)  and Stewart Poulter were the scorers.

RYHOPE  CW's perfect start to the season was maintained at the expense of Boldon CA last night. Martin Swales' side has now  won all three games, scored 12 goals and conceded none.

The  South Tynesiders were on the back foot from the start and after just  seven minutes Jonathan Davies fired past goalkeeper Christopher Anderson.

David  Newby doubled the Wearsiders' lead on 20 minutes before two goals in four minutes  from Calvin Magnus and Joe Walton killed any hopes Boldon harboured  of making a comeback.

The  home side produced a better defensive performance in the second 45  minutes but right at the end Ryhope went nap with Richard Jordan's strike.

Ashbrooke  Belford  House were hit for six on their visit to Kirkbymoorside  who went in front after just three minutes.

Robert  McDirmid's goalbound shot was deflected leaving Luke  Jenkinson with  an easy  tap-in.  It was no more difficult for Jenkinson after half an  hour,  when he was again left with an open goal.

Two  minutes  into  the second period Daman Cox got on to the end  of  a  Johnny Brown free kick and worse was to follow for Tommy Dobbing's team.

Daryl  Rivis  made it four, sidefooting into an empty net, McDirmid broke  clear and  slotted  past goalkeeper Kyle Donaldson who was beaten for a sixth time  by Ryan Rivis.
