DARLINGTON Cleveland Bridge have made an impressive start to their first season
in the competition and victory at Windscale propelled them into second position.
Nor should their success in Cumbria be under-rated because Windscale would have
gone second had they won.
The Bridge though built up a two-goals interval lead and after conceding a goal
mid-way through the second half, withstood late pressure for a fully deserved
win.
Michael Carter gave them the advantage on the half-hour, slotting the ball past
goalkeeper James Dolan and four minutes later he converted a penalty.
Windscale rallied for Dean Rogers to throw his side a lifeline but Bridge
goalkeeper Michael Fraves competently dealt with the home side's attempts
to level.
Darlington are two points behind leaders Easington Colliery and one ahead of
Ryhope CW, who defeated Stockton Town for the second time in a week.
The Wearsiders romped to a four-goals victory in the previous match but were
taken to the wire when they were again on Teesside.
James Fairley and Chris Trewick fired Ryhope into a two-goals lead but after
Martin Thompson reduced the deficit, it was all to play for especially after the
Wearsiders had Richard Jordan sent off.
Ashbrooke Belford House are fourth following victory over Cleator Moor Celtic.
The Wearsiders went ahead after just two minutes through Mark Green but it was
not until the last minute that Lee Andrews made sure of the points.
At the other end of the table Boldon CA are still pointless. They lost for the
12th consecutive game despite being in front courtesy of Shaun Reay at
Kirkbymoorside who then replied four times through Ryan Rivis (2), Damon Cox and
a Martin Cooper own goal. Chris Robertson converted a late penalty for Boldon.
Prudhoe Town remain second from the basement after they shared the points with
Silksworth for whom Andy Bowes headed in after 35 minutes. Lee Best restored
parity with an excellent volley.
Willington defeated Annfield Plain with a 76th-minute penalty by Scott Turner
and Houghton Town also won by an only goal at Coxhoe Athletic.
The home side suffered a blow after just five minutes with the dismissal of
Shaun Laverick who was deemed to be the last defender.
Despite being numerically disadvantaged, Coxhoe held their own until the 80th
minute when Neil Maddison headed past goalkeeper Tom Orton.
New Marske reached the Third Round of the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup with victory
at Hartlepool where they led thanks to Shaun Mackin and Luke Goodall before
Johnny Bolton responded.
Redcar Athletic made it four wins on the trot. Daniel Drazdauskas and Billy
Millington were their matchwinners at home to Jarrow who had Dean Patton sent
off four minutes from time.
Easington Colliery were the League's last remaining hope in the FA Carlsberg
Vase but they went out at Leeds Carnegie who enjoyed a four-goals romp
courtesy of Greig McCrorie (2) and Kyle Hawthorne (2).
